The Importance of Removing Poly B
Polybutylene (Poly B) is a type of plastic piping that was widely used in residential plumbing systems from the 1970s through the 1990s. While it was originally thought to be a cost-effective alternative to copper, it has since been found to be prone to failure, particularly in areas with higher water pressure or chlorine levels.
The importance of Polybutylene pipe replacement cannot be overstated, as it can lead to significant water damage and even mold growth in homes. Poly B pipes can rupture, causing massive water damage or have pin-hole leaks and micro-fissures that go unnoticed and cause mold behind the walls and ceilings of your home. The subsequent water damage can lead to costly repairs, and many insurance companies are re-evaluating coverage on homes where Poly B is still installed.
Poly B Plumbing Guys specializes in Poly B removal, helping homeowners to replace their Poly B piping with more reliable and durable alternatives. By removing Poly B pipes from your plumbing system, you can protect your home from potential water damage, reduce the risk of leaks and other plumbing issues, and increase the overall value of your property. Don’t wait until it’s too late; contact Poly B Plumbing Guys today to schedule your Calgary Poly B replacement.
Our Poly B Replacement Process
1. On-site free estimate
We believe in the old-fashioned way of doing things. Do a great job, and get paid when the job is done. It’s reassuring for our customers. You can count on our complete commitment to doing the job the right way.
When you reach out to our team, we schedule an on-site visit with you in your home. Our expert will walk through what to expect with our service. You can expect to receive a detailed quote within 24 to 48 hours of our attendance, at no charge to you.
2. Protection
Before we start the Poly B removal process, we want to protect your home from any potential construction damage. We ask that you remove as much furniture and personal belongings out of the work areas as possible. At that point, Poly B Plumbing Guys will take the necessary measures to protect your floors and remaining furniture to minimize potential damage while your home is under construction.
3. Dust Control
We know how important it is to keep your home clean and comfortable during your poly b replacement. That’s why we go the extra mile to reduce dust every step of the way. We protect your floors with durable coverings, seal off work areas with poly barriers, and use HEPA filter vacuums along with dust-reducing cutting tools. Our goal is to keep the dust contained, protect your home, and give you peace of mind while we work.
4. Removing Existing Poly B Plumbing and Drywall
Our Red Seal certified plumbing technicians take pride in providing a professional and worry-free experience when replacing your home’s Poly-B piping. We carefully remove the old piping and install industry-leading pipes and fittings that meet the highest standards of the National Plumbing Code of Canada. To make the process simple for you, we handle all necessary permit applications and inspection requests. When cutting access holes, we do so with the next steps in mind, ensuring the best possible opportunity for a seamless, blemish-free finish once the work is complete.
5. New Drywall and Paint Installation
After your old Poly B pipes are replaced, we’ll make sure your walls and ceilings are put back together beautifully. Our team handles new drywall patches, smooths everything out, and blends ceiling texture where needed. To complete the job, we colour-match your existing paint and apply primer along with two coats of premium latex paint. Many of our clients also choose to repaint entire walls for a crisp, seamless look, and we’re happy to provide that service too. The result? A clean, polished space that looks as though the pipes were never touched. In fact, many of our reviewers say they can’t even tell we were there.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's included in your Poly B replacement service?
Every Poly B replacement includes the full scope of work to return your home to its original condition — not just the plumbing. Each project covers: a free on-site estimate with a fixed written quote, all permits and municipal inspections, complete removal of existing Poly B piping, installation of new PEX-A pipe and fittings to National Plumbing Code standards, drywall patching and ceiling repair, texture matching (knockdown, stipple, or smooth), primer plus two coats of premium latex paint, and full job-site cleanup. Most competitors stop at the plumbing and leave you to hire a separate drywall and paint crew. Our pricing covers all three trades under one quote.
How much does Poly B replacement cost?
Poly B replacement starts at $10,000 and scales based on home size, number of bathrooms, ceiling and wall access required, and the extent of drywall and paint restoration needed. Typical ranges:
| Home Type | Approximate Range |
|---|---|
| Bungalow with unfinished basement | $8,000 – $12,000 |
| Bungalow with finished basement | $11,000 – $16,000 |
| Two-storey with finished ceilings | $14,000 – $22,000+ |
| Custom homes / acreages | Quoted per project |
You’ll receive a fixed written quote within 24–48 hours of the on-site visit. The quoted price is the price you pay — no hourly billing, no surprise change orders.
Do you only replace the Poly B, or do you also fix the walls and ceilings?
Both. Drywall, texture, and paint restoration are included in the standard quote — not optional add-ons. After the plumbing crew finishes, our drywall team patches every access cut, blends ceiling texture to match the rest of the room, and the paint crew applies primer plus two coats of premium latex. Most clients tell us they can’t identify where the cuts were made once we leave. If you’d prefer full-wall repaints rather than spot blending for a cleaner finish, we offer that as an upgrade.
How do I know if my home actually has Poly B and needs replacement
Check three places: at the hot water tank, where pipes enter the manifold, and at exposed plumbing in unfinished basement ceilings. Poly B is gray, blue, or sometimes black plastic pipe — flexible, not rigid like copper or white PVC — and is usually stamped with “PB2110.” Homes built between 1978 and 1998 are the highest-risk group. If you spot Poly B, replacement should be prioritized when any of the following apply: your insurer has flagged it, you’re seeing pinhole leaks or staining, water pressure is dropping, or you’re planning to sell. We provide free on-site Poly B identification as part of every estimate.
What kind of pipe do you replace Poly B with?
We replace Poly B with PEX-A (cross-linked polyethylene), the current Canadian residential plumbing standard. PEX-A is approved under the National Plumbing Code of Canada, carries a 25-year manufacturer warranty, resists chlorine and high-pressure failure (the two issues that destroy Poly B), and handles freeze-thaw cycling without splitting. It’s the same pipe used in new home construction across Western Canada today. We do not use cheaper PEX-B as a cost shortcut — every job uses PEX
How long does the entire project take from quote to finished home?
Most projects run 7 to 14 business days from project start. The breakdown:
- On-site quote: 1 visit, written quote returned within 24–48 hours
- Plumbing replacement: 1–2 days, water restored same day
- Drywall (patch, mud, sand): 3–5 days, with curing time between coats
- Paint: 1–2 days
You stay in your home throughout. Water is only off during active plumbing hours on day one. Kitchens, bedrooms, and at least one bathroom remain functional in nearly every job. From the time you call to a completed home, expect 2–4 weeks depending on quote scheduling and crew availability.
Are you licensed, insured, and is the work permitted?
Yes to all three. Plumbing is performed by Red Seal certified plumbing technicians, every job pulls the required municipal plumbing permit, and every installation passes a final inspection by the local authority before walls are closed. We carry full commercial liability insurance and WCB coverage on all crews — documentation is available on request before any work starts. We’re also a division of Beach’s Quality Drywall Ltd., an established Alberta company, and an accredited business with the Better Business Bureau.
